Krafton to publish its new PUBG game in India

South Korean gaming company Krafton will distribute its new PUBG game for smartphones – PUBG: New State – in India on its own when it launches worldwide on November 11.
This is a marked departure from last year when its previous PUBG battle royale game – published by Chinese internet giant Tencent in the country – had to be withdrawn following a ban on Chinese apps.

The move also follows the launch in July of its Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) version of the popular game, which was specifically developed for the Indian market.

“We see these (BGMI and PUBG: New State) as two separate games that provide different experiences on mobile. Battlegrounds Mobile India is a game that successfully transported the original PUBG experience to mobile devices, whereas PUBG: New State, developed by PUBG Studios, is a brand-new game in the growing PUBG franchise,” Krafton said in a statement.
It was not clear whether registrations for the new game among Indian users would end up cannibalising the existing user numbers of the BGMI version, which has been downloaded over 50 million times from the Google Play Storesince its launch in the country.

The company has said that PUBG: New State had surpassed more than 50 million pre-registrations on the Apple mobile operating system iOS and rival Google’s Android OS since they were thrown open in February, when the company formally made the announcement of the game’s launch later in the year.

The new game will be free to play on mobile phones and will be available in 17 languages, Krafton said.
“PUBG: New State inherits the core of the PUBG IP and will have a competitiveness in and of itself on the global market,” Krafton chief executive CH Kim said during its online showcase. “Krafton will continue to produce games that will be enjoyed by players across the world. We’re committed to offering an expanded experience based on the belief that games will become the most powerful type of media,” Kim added.

Prior to the ban last year, India was among the biggest markets for the PUBG game with over 175 million downloads, or about a quarter of the global downloads, according to data from industry tracker Sensor Tower.
