Champions League draw: UEFA to conduct Round of 16 draw again after technical error

In a first, the Champions League draw for the Round of 16 fixtures have been declared null and void due to a technical error in the software that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, the UEFA said.

The UEFA on Monday afternoon announced the Champions League Round of 16 draw which was announced earlier in the day will be conducted again due to a technical error in the software which advises officials which teams can and cannot be paired together.

“Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16,” the UEFA said in a statement.

The earlier draw has been declared null and void.

There was plenty of excitement as Manchester United were drawn against PSG in their Round of 16 fixture, giving rise to the prospect of a mouthwatering clash between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

UCL DRAW DECLARED NULL AND VOID

Benfica vs Real Madrid, Villarreal vs Manchester City, Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich, Salzburg vs Liverpool, Inter Milan vs Ajax, Sporting vs Juventus, Chelsea vs LOSC Lille, PSG vs Manchester United.

After numerous meetings in Spain’s ‘El Clasico’, they last played each other in 2020 when Messi was with Barcelona and Ronaldo at Juventus, with the Portugal captain scoring twice at the Camp Nou as the Italian side won 3-0 in the group stage.

The last time United faced PSG in the last 16, the Premier League side fought back from a first leg deficit to advance while they shared the spoils in the group stage last season with one victory apiece.
